Purpose

The purpose of The Ignorance Stops Here, the official stay in school tour hosted by Music Changing Lives, a California non-profit organization, is to integrate existing research with real-time data regarding the current dropout problem in California. Innovative programs born from current research in combination with California’s core curriculum will help minimize our communities’ high school dropout rate. Research will be used to generate policy recommendations to address the dropout problem along with teaching every student that they can live and extend themselves beyond their current reality!

Programs and Impacts

Program Objectives:
To provide out-of-school programs that will encourage students to stay in school and receive a high school diploma.

Goals:
Develop innovative strategies based on current research that engage students.
Create incentive programs giving students the skills they need to be successful in the work force.

Activities
The project consists of three activities undertaken at each high school over a 5-Month period:
Activity 1:  Promote MCL Model - 8 effective strategies to reduce the dropout rate
Activity 2:  Collect and discuss student surveys
Activity 3:  Financial Literacy

Our goal is to give students hope and encourage them to take advantage of opportunities available in completing their high school education.  Our guest speakers will motivate students to be the best they can be.

 

Impacts:
MCL’s goal is to substantially improve student outcomes: reduce dropout rates, improve attendance, and increase academic course-taking which will enable students to earn enough credits to graduate on time.  Studies prove students without access to after school programs such as “The Ignorance Stops Here,” become even more disengaged from school.  Students that are offered these services are least likely to drop out of high school.

MCL is reaching out to employers to assist in designing the MCL job program, which will provide workplace experiences, and can offer summer or even permanent employment to students.
